Our History
Harrison County was founded in 1839 by the Republic of Texas on the eastern edge of the new country. The county became one of the largest and richest in antebellum Texas.
Harrison County’s Tuskegee Airmen
Harrison County counted among its many men and women in service during the war, four of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. Enlisting in the Army Air Corps at the war’s onset, they waited a year for the War Department to organize a segregated training facility at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
Fred Weathersby was a member of flight crews, Romeo Williams became a pilot, Charlie Johnson was made an officer and Mac Hopkins trained as a flight instructor and aerial photographer.
The four were admirable soldiers who fought faithfully for their country while enduring segregation and discrimination.
Sadly, we do not have a photograph of Charlie Johnson.
